Racism & Identity Politics

Though we do not want to think about it, and some will deny its existence, there is a worldwide phenomenon happening right now. It is ripping apart nations, communities, and even families.  It’s called “Identity Politics.” It is dangerous. Those who engage in it are contributing to the destruction of our great nation. Those who promote it in government, the media, and international relations are doing so for their own political and financial benefit. But they are playing with fire.

Trump and the End Times

It’s a funny thing. During the primaries, many Christians opposed Donald Trump because he wasn’t “Christian” enough. But since he won the presidential election, some of those Christians have decided that these may not be the end-times after all. They place so much hope in President-Elect Trump that they foresee only good things happening in the United States and the world. And it’s true that some positive things have already taken place. Now, I don’t know how the President-Elect will

Christianity’s World-Wide Positive Impact

With all of the negativity Christianity has been receiving lately, it seems the bigger and overarching picture may have disappeared from view.  Robert Morgan conveys it well in his book, The Strength You Need (Nashville, TN: W Publishing Group, 2016).    From page 43: Christianity has changed the planet more than any other philosophy or faith system ever conceived on our globe.  Christians have been at the vanguard of the abolition of slavery, the promotion of human rights, the advance of prison reform, the

Mob Rule in Congress?

Last week, the “Occupy” movement came to Capitol Hill. A band of 60 Democrat lawmakers — including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi — staged a “sit in” on the floor of the House of Representatives. Nothing quite like it has ever happened before in the U.S. capitol. In essence, our national lawmakers flaunted the very concept of the rule of law. In the wake of the Orlando massacre, the mainstream media portrayed them as heroic. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan

BREXIT

240 years ago the United States of America declared its independence from Great Britain. Last week, Britain had an independence day of its own. The citizens of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. Voters turned out in droves. 52% voted to “Leave” the EU. 48% voted to “Remain.” Even with that fairly close margin, more people voted to “Leave” the EU than ever voted for anything in Britain’s history. Prior to the referendum, the fear-mongering from commentators,

Jesus doesn’t steal our identity, He gives us one

“Identity Theft” is one of the fastest growing crimes in the world today. And, sooner or later, it will affect all of us. It can be a minor nuisance, or it can totally devastate one’s life. Your name represents your authority, and that is what the hackers are trying to steal. They want to use your authority to enter the most secret places and steal from you. It’s the same way in our spiritual lives. Satan constantly seeks ways to

The Eloquence of a Lily

Have you walked through a beautiful garden in the springtime?  It’s very difficult to be weighed down by the cares of the world when you’re surrounded by the majesty of God’s beautiful art.  Solomon was a glorious king, Jesus tells us, with the wealth of several kingdoms at his disposal.  But all of his sparkling finery pales in comparison to the simplest lily that God placed beside your feet. And how many office hours have those lilies put in?  How

America, God Shed His Grace On Thee

Remember the wonderful anthem to our beloved nation, “America the Beautiful”? When was the last time you sang it? It always makes me a little misty-eyed when I do. Have you ever noticed that “America the Beautiful” is chockful of prayer? Look at it. Each verse highlights something wonderful about America, then concludes with a prayer asking God to sustain us and continue to bless us. But the prayer in the first verse is the one that I believe is

Islam & Christianity – A Redeeming Difference

Christians believe that Jesus Christ is our Redeemer. He redeemed us from the penalty of our sins — eternal torment and separation from God — by taking upon Himself our sins and guilt, and paying our penalty by dying in our place. It doesn’t seem like an even exchange, does it? He gets our sin and we get His righteousness. His righteousness reconciles us to the Father. And it happens the moment we believe in and accept Christ’s substitutionary death.

The Mystery of the Magi

For many of us, Christmas is our favorite time of the year. But each year it grows more difficult to navigate the suffocating commercialism and secularization of the season to arrive at the genuine reason for the celebration: the incarnation of God as a human to become the sacrifice for our sins and make possible our reconciliation to God. I’m afraid we’ve lost our sense of wonderment at the unfathomable miracles that made possible the advent of our Savior. One
